Field Trip Leader: Carol Schneier
Description: We will explore a typical Piedmont Oak-Hickory forest for a couple of hours, identifying overstory trees, midstory and shrubby plants comprising this ecosystem, as well as discussing its dynamics over time.
Location & Directions: GA-400N Exit 6; N on Northridge Pkwy 0.6 mi to R on Roberts Dr; N 0.6 mi to R on Island Ford Pkwy, L at the first parking lot at the end (closest to Roberts Dr.).
Meet At: 1:30pm Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, – Island Ford, Parking Lot closest to Roberts Drive. Park address: 1978 Island Ford Parkway Sandy Springs, GA 30350. There is a $5 daily use fee, unless you have a Senior or Annual Pass.
Bathroom Facilities: None at the Roberts Dr. Parking Lot, but available at the Visitor Center.
Walking Difficulty: Easy; we will mostly stick to trails on the uplands, walking about 1 mile. Walking shoes /hiking boots are recommended.
Bring: iNaturalist or the Google Lens app on your smartphone will aid with plant identifications, or a tree identification book if you have one (Trees of Georgia and Adjacent States by Brown and Kirkman is recommended).
