Field Trip Leader: Carol Schneier
Description: We will explore 19th century mill ruins near Sope Creek, and (if time allows) a nearby beech cove.
Location & Directions: I-75 to I-285 East. Take exit #24 and go North on Riverside Dr. to Johnson Ferry Rd. Turn NW (left), cross the river and turn west (left) at second traffic light, Paper Mill Rd. Cross the creek and go 0.5 miles, turn south (left) into parking lot.
Meet At: 1:30pm Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area – Cochran Shoals unit, Sope Creek parking area. Park address: 3760 Paper Mill Rd SE, Marietta, GA 30067. There is a $5 daily use fee, unless you have a Senior or Annual Pass.
Bathroom Facilities: None at the Sope Creek parking area.
Walking Difficulty: Easy; we will mostly stick to slightly rolling trails descending to Sope Creek. If time allows, we will visit a beech cove. Walking shoes/hiking boots are recommended.
Bring: iNaturalist or the Google Lens app on your smartphone will aid with plant identifications.
