Description:  This will be an unusual trip to see spring wildflowers in the Fall Line sandhills. We normally visit the sandhills in the fall when there is a dizzying array of flowering plants. However, there are some good spring-flowering wildflowers in this area, as well. We should see gopherweed, Baptisia lanceolata; several species of violet; the rare coastal witch-alder, Fothergilla milleri; downy phlox, Phlox pilosa; trailing phlox, Phlox nivalis; eastern greeneyes, Berlandiera pumila; Carolina sandwort, Geocarpon carolinianum; a couple of milkweeds, including a rare species; and many others. Depending on the weather, we will try to get into one of the larger bogs on the WMA, where we should see several different species of carnivorous plants in flower.

Special Considerations:    We may explore a nice bog with a couple of rare plants. Bring rubber boots or shoes that you don’t mind getting wet and muddy.

Directions:   From Butler, Georgia, take GA 96 west for 13 miles to GA 90. Turn south (left) on to GA 90 and go about 6.8 miles to the Mauk Country Store on the right. We will meet in the parking lot. From Columbus, take US 80 east to Geneva and continue straight on GA 96. In about 7 miles, turn right (south) on to GA 90 and go 6.8 miles to the Mauk Country Store on the right.

Meet:   10:00 at the Mauk Country Store in Mauk, GA.
