Description: We will explore a cove forest above Big Creek for a couple of hours, identifying overstory trees, midstory and shrubby plants comprising this mesic forest, as well as discussing its dynamics over time.
Location & Directions: GA-400N Exit 6; 0.5 mi W on Northridge Rd; Right on Roswell Rd (Rt. 9); N 1.75 mi to R on Riverside Dr. Immediate Left after the bridge to the parking lot.
Meet At: 1:30pm Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, – Vickery Creek, Parking Lot closest to Riverside Rd. Park address: 259 Riverside Rd, Roswell, Georgia 30075. There is a $5 daily use fee, unless you have a Senior or Annual Pass.
Bathroom Facilities: None at the Roberts Dr. Parking Lot.
Walking Difficulty: Moderate; we will ascend (about 80 feet) on a steep trail to the uplands overlooking Big Creek (about 0.5 mi; 1 mile round trip). Walking shoes /hiking boots are recommended.
Bring: iNaturalist or the Google Lens app on your smartphone will aid with plant identifications. Also, bring a tree identification book if you have one (Trees of Georgia and Adjacent States by Brown and Kirkman is recommended).
