Field Trip Leader: Rich Reaves
Description: will start by walking along the road to view some wildflowers, including pink ladyslippers. Then we will start the main hike along an old Forest Service road. Here we expect to see a lot of trilliums of at least 3 species, showy orchis, Thalictrum clavatum, and many other of the usual suspects of mid-spring wildflowers common in the mountains of central north Georgia.
Location and Directions: Take US 19 from the north or south to GA 180 west (just north of Vogel State Park and toward Suches). There is a pull off immediately north of the US 19 / GA 180 intersection and we will caravan to the walk location from there.
Meet At: Meet at the pull off on west side of HWY 129/19 immediately north of intersection with GA 180 (34.772374, -83.913850, WGS84 datum) and determine if carpooling will be necessary due to limited parking at site. From there we will drive to the walk.
Walking: Easy to moderate – mostly will follow an old roadbed but the first half of the walk is uphill. There may be erosion damage to the old roadbed in spots. Distance is indeterminant – dependent on what we are finding – but you can turn back at any time and return to the vehicles.
Facilities: None but what nature offers and somewhat limited due to the steep terrain along the road and abundant poison ivy in some locations.
Bring: Lunch to eat during walk, water, raingear, insect repellent, sturdy footwear.
Contact: Rich Reaves, , 770-827-5186 – cell but will not have service at the walk site.
