If you post either a picture or description and include a description of the habitat where it was observed, it is liekly that someone on the forum will be able to assist in the ID.

The identification at the top of the post is correct. This is indeed
Salvia lyrata
(lyre-leaf sage). The plant has already bloomed and is in the early stages of fruit. What you originally thought were flowers are bracts with some purple coloration near the tip.
