February 24, 2008: Camellia Gardens Tour and Bike Ride - with a prelude at Montezuma Bluffs.
Time: 10 AM at Montezuma Bluffs, 12 Noon at Camellia Gardens
Description: Plans are to start the day at Montezuma Bluffs on the Flint River, where a few early Trilliums (T. maculatum and T. reliquum) should be out, perhaps with other early flora. Following the walk at Montezuma Bluffs, the group will reassemble at Camellia Gardens and Kathy will lead a tour of the Camellia Gardens in Marshallville. After the Gardens tour, the group will take a moderate bike ride on dirt roads with fat tire bikes to see peach country (peaches probably won't be blooming, farmers sprayed them to delay it), a leisurely close up look at the really lovely unspoiled Old South. Bring a picnic lunch.
Directions: to Montezuma Bluffs: From Marshallville, travel on GA Hwy 49 south toward Montezuma. Approximately 2.2 mi north of Montezuma on GA 49, Crooks Landing Road will be on the right (heading east). Turn onto Crooks Landing Road (There will be a brown boat launch sign for the road). In less than 1 mile, the road will begin to descend sharply, and you will see a large graveled parking area on the north (right side) of the road. Park there.
