Description: Join Naturalist Jerry Hightower for a look at the glorious autumn scenery along Indian Ridge Trail to Charlie’s Trapping Creek, the Indian Rock Shelter and then up the Salamander Creek Trail to enjoy the grand view from atop Overlook Ridge above Devil’s Race Course Shoals. We will then take Cabin Creek Trail past Civil War gun emplacements through a beautiful fall forest to the parking area. We hope to see the golden browns of the fern fronds, a rich tapestry of colorful foliage, and to enjoy the autumn air. Discover the process of leaf color change and learn about the pigments that provide the color to our forest. We will travel through mature oak-hickory forest, mesic ravine forest, and floodplain forest. Our hike will take us over and past extraordinary rock outcrops and formations influenced by the Brevard Fault, which runs through the Unit. Jerry has been roaming these ridges since childhood and knows well the area’s magic.
