9:00 a.m. to Approximately 4:00 p.m.
Description: We will paddle through extraordinarily beautiful and rugged mountain scenery. Designated as Wild & Scenic by Congress in 1974, the Chattooga has been placed in a “World Class” category. This is the first section of the Wild & Scenic River open to canoes and kayaks. The Chattooga drops from its headwaters at 3,000 feet elevation to just 950 feet at Lake Tugaloo. This creates its rapid water flow, which lends to its legendary fame. Like the Toccoa the Chattooga has many class II rapids and one easy to portage class III rapid. This river offers a truly wonderful river experience.
Location: We will meet at 9:00 a.m. at the Hwy 28 parking area and launch site in South Carolina near Mountain Rest.
Facilities: Toilet only at put in and take out.
Difficulty: Novice paddlers with considerable river experience.
Bring: A lunch and water to carry along and we will picnic on river. You may wish to bring binoculars, hand lens, and camera in a water proof, durable dry bag. Remember to dress for the weather and do not forget rain gear. Dress in layers so that you can adjust to changes in the temperature and your activity level. A hat and sunscreen is recommended
Reservations are required by calling Jerry at 770-971-8919.
Limit: 25 persons
Note: Some persons may be camping in the parking area at Highway 28. I have camped there a number of times and it is very pleasant.
