Sope Creek Unit, Earth Day Clean Up of Creek & Tour of Mill Ruins

Description: Celebrate Earth Week & Earth Day by joining the National Park Service for a wonderful hike followed by a much needed clean up of Sope Creek from Caney Creek to the Paper Mill Road Bridge. Tour this beautiful National Historic Register site and the beautiful stone ruins of the nineteen century paper mill along the banks scenic Sope Creek. The mysteries of the mills will be revealed as you walk through time from 1855 to 1903. The massive stone walls of the mill ruins have seen much and have many stories to tell. Learn some of these wonderful stories, fact and fable, as you stroll along the beautiful creek. Discover wonderful wildflowers and how they were used by Native Americans and early settlers. Who was old Chief Sope, what tragedy befell poor Johnny Dickerson, why did the mills close, and what occurred during July, 1864? Join us and find out! At the conclusion of the walk we will move along the banks of Sope Creek collecting all the trash as we make our way back to the bridge. We will pile the bags of litter at the gate next to the bridge for pick up. Picnic a picnic for after the clean up.
Note: A $3. daily entrance fee or $25. annual pass is required.
Afternoon Wildflower Walk at 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Please make separate reservations for this hike at 678-538-1200.
Location: We will meet in the parking area at the bulletin board at 3760 Paper Mill Road,; Marietta, Georgia 30067
Facilities: Portable Toilets
Difficulty: Fairly easy.
Bring: Please bring work gloves if you can. Remember to dress for the weather and wear very comfortable hiking shoes. Dress in layers so that you can adjust to changes in the temperature and your activity level. Wear old sneakers or other lace up shoes if you plan to get into the water. NO SANDALS, Please. A hat and sunscreen is highly recommended. There are picnic tables at the parking area and wonderful picnic rocks along the creek if you bring your lunch
