With Volume 27 being the only completed volume on mosss available at eFloras.org in their monumenta work, The Flora of North America, the above listing is complete as per that tome.  However, apart from the limited number of illustrations of the mosses available at eFloras, what is now needed is linkage to available images on the net of the Georgia species.
While I would prefer to see images from sites within Georgia, I am not in the position to do so.  Therefore I wish to encourage any forum participant to post messages with linkage to the pertinent images. If you wish to contribute images then I recommend Photobucket as a worthwhile site to load and save your images on.

Here is an example:

I just ran across this site that may have images of some of the listed species.

Hey Jerry
Interesting discussion...  and most of the best references have been recommended about bryophytes in Georgia by others.  I will add to the list:

Books

Janice Glime's Ebook... still in progress... promises to be the BEST accessible reference source for bryologists and moss lovers.

In addition, she is author of another older reference book that has good color photos... and many of the same bryophytes can be found in parts of Georgia... Elfin World of Mosses and Liverworts of Upper Pennisula of Northern Michigan. It is only available directly from the publisher...

Susan Munch's recent book... Mosses and Liverworts of Pennsylvania... 2006..GOOD reference... GOOD photos... although a bryologist, she writes in terms that can be understood by the hobbyist. Once again... mosses in Pennsylvania... similar to Georgia's. She is running low on inventory... can be ordered from her directly (if she has any left) or might find it at bookstore if lucky.

As another responder noted... ID can be challenging. Taxonomy key used in Crum and Anderson is a CHALLENGE for me to comprehend... quite technical... not user friendly... but it is still the definitive reference book.  Please note: Even in this book, phenology of bryophytes is not cited... And the reproductive process can be critical in ID (sometimes possible when sporophytes are present)... Malcolm Sargent in Illinois has developed a key that is much easier... he should post it on the Internet in the near future.

Additional Academic Internet References

Duke Univerisity Herbarium... Database of 650 + Bryophytes in the SE... now up and running

USDA Web site... photo gallery... lots of images provided by Michael Lueth of Germany...

CONTACTS

As for expertise... Ken (UT-Knoxville) and Paul (UNA) are wonderful resources.  Both quite busy.

In Georgia, I've located one Main Moss Contact... Lynne Randolph in Atlanta... she created a demonstration moss garden at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens back in early 90s. Her moss biz is slow because of the drought and watering restictions. She told me there used to be a couple of professors at UGA but I haven't tracked them down yet.

Field Guide of Bryophytes is needed for all of us... yet, it needs to include several views... some mosses have dramatic changes in appearance based on their current water content... and can transform quickly (Rhodobryum roseum... a favorite example). And... it is fascinating to view not only the colony... but the individual plant... and then take it another step and show it under the microscope... Seems like at least five photos would be helpful... and descriptions written for the general public not just botanists and bryologists. Actually... this idea is in the works... What do you think?

NEWS FLASH... Great Smokies Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage April 23-27, 2008... Gatlinburg TN... Ken McFarland will be leading BRYOPHYTE walk on Saturday in Greenbriar Ranger Station area... incredible opportunity to learn from him... (he is the creator of the Pilgrimage and still serves as main organizer each year)

Other summer workshops in SE include: Western Carolina University and Highlands Biological Station...

Moss Workshop scheduled on Earth Day, April 22, 2008 on 300-acre mountain retreat in Brevard, NC... will include:  Moss Gardening... Basic Bryophyte ID... Full-cycle GREEN rescue of mosses... Guided Moss walk...

If you wish to network further, I am in Atlanta frequently since my son attends GA Tech... I'm lucky enough to live in the mountains of WNC... over 450+ bryophytes... started creating my own moss garden about 8 years ago... go mossin' 3-4 times a week... even got some great photos this afternoon of Polytrichum in an icicle and some dramatic black Grimmia on striated granite/quartz rock face.

Thanks Annie for the contributions! Saw your post over at GardenWeb. Was hoping you post more particulars on the Earth Day
moss related events as I am not involved in such or any related events. Not even locally. Very limited resources especially of time.
Currently I am working on a complete rehash of the moss section of my website and will be adding an extensive links page to it
plus more plants and what I am doing with cultivation in containers which is the only way that I can grow them out here in
Coastal California.
What I would like to see is a little more tying up images to the listing I left here but at the moment it is beyond my time resources to do so and am hoping others can perform the task. I only wish that MOBOT had already completed its moss flora so that the list that I developed from it on the Georgia mosses would be complete. But in time.
In the meantime I agree with you Annie. That is one reason I have constructed the moss journals on my website. Just a basic preliminary intro that provides some worthwhile (?) images and some info on the mosses.  A pictorial guide sounds nice but I
think it should focus on a specific area, such as the Piedmont or the Blue Ridge Mountains and feature 3 basic images: one of the general area that the subject colony is growing in, the subject colony of moss, and a close up of the subject moss (perhaps adding another image(s) for seasonal changes in the colony).  There seems to be a strong interest in such a book but little activity from what I can see!
For those who can, I definitely encourage visiting and imaging your local mosses with close ups too!

A very interesting development occurred during the past week.
The site at which I had most of my plant web  journals deleted my journals and blocked me from access! Shocked
Without explanation of course. It is unfortunate but it is a definite HEADS UP! alert to me.
What is even more interesting is that my home page site at freeservers also blocked me from access and
noted that I did not exist at that site. However it recovered my site in a day or two. Again without
explanation.
It is doubtful that I exceeded the bandwidth allowed at either of the sites. Possibly may be due to the fact that
I am or was using three different free sites to host webjournals. Howbeit!

So I have (as of today) just about recovered most of my lost pages and loaded them onto Photobucket since most
are just jpegs. To view the pages use the menu in the upper left corner and click on any listed subdirectory, such
as Mosses and then any further subdirectory such as Georgia mosses. Here is the link:
http://s152.photobucket.com/albums/s184/jwcimage/Mosses/

I keep thinking that these events did me a BIG FAVOR! Now I do not have to be concerned about constructing HTML pages!!  Grin

This morning I decided to go ahead and work in links to what images I can find on the moss species listing. Will try and add some everyday until I am done. I will be using the USDA images and then will try and find those not there. It is doubtful that I will be successful with finding images that the USDA do not cover elsewhere. If you are into mosses and find the links of value I recommend that you copy the entire page and post onto a Notepad document. This page can be opened with IE.

I'm no botanist, and I don't even play one on TV.

Sounds to me like y'all need to have a mosses wiki. You could control who gets to create the info, of course, but wikis are stable and easy to use. I have been working sporadically on setting one up for BotSoc, and I would think mosses could be a part of that. Any interest?

Thanks Merrill for the suggestion. I have gone as far as I am going with this thread. If I am still around in a year I will check on the images at USDA to add other links if any new ones have been added to that site. I definitely welcome any additional replies with links to images of the listed Georgia species as well as notation of other non listed species found in Georgia as the list is only from Vol. 27 at efloras and does not cover all the mosses found in the US yet. For additional images and information check my photobucket site

It looks like the folks at MOBOT are well on their way to getting Volume 2 of the Bryophytic Flora of North America done.
Below is a listing of what has been posted to date. There may be some additional editing of the identifications before the next flora is issued. I have tried to find what images I could at the USDA site which were only a few. There appears to be some difference in identification between the USDA and MOBOT, which I have noted when found.  I have not tried to determine any additional synonymy.
