Description: If you love Trilliums, Trout Lilies, Spring ephemerals and old growth trees this field trip is for you. The timing of the trip will coincide with the peak flowering period of Trillium underwoodii and Erythronium umbilicatum and a few other spring ephemerals. North Florida’s Red Hills region has rolling terrain dissected with rivers, streams and lakes. This area still has considerable natural habitat diversity due to its plantation history since the late 1800’s.
We will visit Trillium Gardens, a 7 acre preserve in north Tallahassee owned by Dan Miller. It is a remnant old growth ravine slope beech/magnolia forest home to 250,000 Trillium underwoodii and many other Spring ephemerals. As time and interest allow, we may visit 1 or 2 other nearby sites with similar Trillium abundance before heading back to GA in the afternoon to briefly visit the Wolf Creek Trout Lily Preserve near Cairo, GA. This preserve, located at the southern limit of its natural range, has the largest and most dense population of trout lilies known to exist anywhere.
